  • More than 165 people attended last year’s virtual performance of Winnipeg composer Jonathan Alexiuk’s “Wonderful World Medley.”

Singers in Manitoba are raising their voices and inviting others to join them.

The Manitoba Choral Association is preparing for a virtual concert. They’re looking for additional singers aged 10 and up to join them in a virtual performance of Canadian composer Sarah Quartel’s “Wide Open Spaces.”

According to the association’s president, Stuart Sladden, it’s a tune that many prairie singers will like.

“The work itself portrays a trip, whether it’s a journey out in the world or a journey from within,” Sladden explained. “The work appealed to us since it has a few short sentences. ‘With the huge sky above me, I’m on my way, scanning the horizon of a fresh new day,’ for example, is one of the lines. “Here on the grasslands, the image of that huge sky resonated with us,” Sladden added.

The virtual provincial choir arose from the termination of the MCA’s provincial honor choir program due to the pandemic last year. Sladden explained that the program was held in person for many years, bringing singers from all around the province together for an intensive practice weekend, culminating in a major performance.

“As an organization, we’re working hard to discover new ways to connect and reach out to our members, and we thought, ‘Well, the notion of a virtual choir is something that a lot of choirs have done.’

“So we thought, maybe we could do something similar that is provincially oriented, so we could gather singers from all around the province, similar to the provincial honors choir program,” Sladden said.

Last year’s virtual concert of Winnipeg composer Jonathan Alexiuk’s “Wonderful World Medley” gathered more than 165 people.

“The response was extraordinarily well last year. Sladden said, “One of the primary strands of the response that we heard was simply how lovely it was to be singing again.”

It is not necessary to have any prior singing experience to participate.

Singers will have access to the score, practice aids, and director’s comments after registering. Singers will take part in two virtual rehearsals in March. The vocalists will then videotape themselves at home and add each footage to the final performance video. On May 2nd, it will be launched.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to perform alongside vocalists from throughout the province, and there aren’t many opportunities like this,” Sladden remarked.
